Of Spirit and Flesh, Old Self and New

C.S. Lewis echos this same concept in Mere Christianity:

“Faith is the art of holding on to things in spite of your changing moods and circumstances.”
Why would a princess "unhappily" be in a mood that would normally make a person unable to do what is right? Because her sin nature is still there, unfortunately. We see many Scriptural references to the mortification of sin in the Bible.

Romans 7

4 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

There are many other references to this concept of putting to death our earthly nature in Scripture:

Colossians 3:5

New International Version
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

 Galatians 5:24

New International Version
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Romans 8:13

New International Version
For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

 1 Peter 2:11

New International Version
Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

Ephesians 4:22-23

New International Version (NIV)
22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;

Romans 6:6-7

New International Version (NIV)
6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

Christ came to set us free.............
