We are pleased to announce that the new George MacDonald Memorial Bench on Cullen’s Castle Hill will be officially dedicated on May 27, 2018.
We have been planning a Cullen MacDonald Memorial for over 18 years. This is a great fulfillment for us, which we hope will solidify Cullen's rightful place in MacDonald's legacy.
A day of festivities and a medieval festival is planned all day in Cullen to celebrate the completion of the “Castle Hill Project,” and its Grand Opening, of which the MacDonald bench is but one small part.
As can be seen from the photograph, the MacDonald Bench overlooks Cullen’s Seatown, beach, and Cullen Bay, all of which served as backdrop for MacDonald’s classic 1875 novel Malcolm which was set in Cullen. MacDonald visited Cullen many times during his life, including two visits in 1872 and 1873 during which he researched and began writing Malcolm.
We will be on hand for the dedication, along with Joseph and Susan Dindinger of Wise Path Books. We hope you will join us—if not in person then in spirit! And we hope that many of you will eventually be able to visit Castle Hill, and sit overlooking the very scene that MacDonald enjoyed so much when working on Malcolm.
